The gyokuro genmaicha is a smooth and sweet green tea made by combining high quality tea leaves with pieces of roasted rice to produce a warm, nutty flavor

Taste

Gyokuro Genmaicha flavor chart

Discover the results of Nio Teas’ 4 step tea tasting method

When assessing the flavor of Gyokuro Genmaicha, we consider both the aroma and how it interacts with the palate. We look for notes of dryness, acidity, minerality, and sweetness. Additionally, we evaluate the tea's texture, also known as mouthfeel. For roasted teas, we assess the level of roasting in the taste profile as it is a typical trait found in most roasted teas.

Step 1 - Observing the Appearance

The leaves of the Gyokuro Genmaicha are dark and rolled into tight needle shapes and the toasted rice is a pale beige color

Step 2 - Assessing the Aroma

The aroma coming off the dry leaves of the Gyokuro Genmaicha is warm and toasty, with notes of well-done toast

Step 3 - Tasting the Tea

This Gyokuro Genmaicha begins with a light sweetness, which soon transforms into a mild acidity. The warm, roasted notes of popcorn and caramel come in later to round out the structure of this tea. Overall, the tea is light, sweet and fresh.

Step 4 - Evaluating the sensation on the palate

This gyokuro genmaicha is very light on the roasted notes and instead, the sweet and citrusy flavors play more heavily on the palate. The structure of the tea is smooth and buttery, with each taste layer transitioning seamlessly into the next.

JAS Japanese Agriculture Standards logo

JAS Certified

As you browse our selection of tea packs, you may notice the JAS (Japanese Agricultural Standard) certification, which is regulated by the Japanese government. As part of our partnership with larger tea farms, we require them to obtain this certification through thorough soil testing and sampling, ensuring the highest quality standards are met.

Furthermore, we take pride in collaborating with smaller farms that may face resource limitations for extensive testing. In such cases, we accept their tea under the "pesticide-free" label, providing them with opportunities to showcase their exceptional quality tea. This allows us to support smaller farmers while also upholding our unwavering commitment to quality.

How to prepare the tea

When it comes to brewing the gyokuro genmaicha, we recommend using a slightly higher temperature and a shorter brewing time. This higher temperature will push out these warmer, nutty tasting notes from the rice, leading to a delicious drinking experience.

  • Step 1

Heat the water up to a temperature of 95°C (203°F), which is the ideal temperature for the gyokuro genmaicha.

    Step 2

Add 5 grams of the gyokuro genmaicha to your kyusu teapot and pour in 150ml of the heated water.

  • Step 3

Let the gyokuro genmaicha brew in the water for 30 seconds without disturbing the leaves. This allows the rice and the tea leaves to release a nice roasted flavor and aroma into the water.

    Step 4

After the brewing time is up, pour out the brewed gyokuro genmaicha from the teapot. The teapot will automatically filter out the leaves and the stems so they don't end up in your cup. Enjoy your delicious cup of gyokuro genmaicha tea!

  • 2nd brew

Don't throw out your gyokuro genmaicha just yet! There is still plenty more tea to be had. Just add the same temperature water to the teapot again and let the leaves brew for 1 minute on each subsequent infusion.

Necessary teaware

To elevate your gyokuro genmaicha brewing to the next level, we recommend preparing the tea in a kyusu teapot. This traditional Japanese teapot is designed to allow the tea leaves to unfurl and release their warm, roasted flavors into the water.

The kyusu also has a built-in filter made out of either metal or clay. This automatically filters out the tea leaves as you pour, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable tea-drinking experience without any getting any leaves in the tea cup. Using a kyusu teapot will enhance your Shizuoka Hojicha brewing ritual and really help you get the most out of your tea brewing experience.

Alternative without teaware

If you don’t have a kyusu home, you don’t have to miss out on this wonderful green tea. The next best alternative when it comes to preparing the gyokuro genmaicha is the tea strainer. This may produce as rich of a flavor compared to the kyusu, but at least it will keep the leaves from getting into your cup! You can always upgrade to better tea brewing equipment later.

Takada Masahiro farm in japan

Location of production and farmer

Information about the farm

This Gyokuro genmaicha green tea is made by the farmer Takada Masahiro in Uji. His company Chanoka dates back to 1900 when his great grandfather started their first tea garden in Uji and since then they have dedicated their lives to growing and producing some of the best teas in Japan.

Sourced in Uji

Japan

The gyokuro genmaicha tea is from Uji, a region famous for its production of green tea. The first Japanese tea was cultivated at Kozanji temple, not too far from Uji. Later on, tea production began to shift south and Uji became a hotbed for tea production, particularly matcha. Still to this day Uji has a reputation of producing some of the best green tea and many tourists come from all over the world to take part in tea ceremonies here. The gyokuro genmaicha is an excellent continuation of the proud legacy of Uji tea.

Cultivar and tea plant variety

The gyokuro genmaicha is made from the Yabukita cultivar, the most popular tea plant variety in Japan.

  • Yabukita

Yabukita has emerged as the reigning tea cultivar in Japan, commanding a staggering 75% of the total tea production. Its widespread popularity can be attributed to multiple factors, including its remarkable frost resistance, which makes it well-suited for the colder winters of central Japan. Additionally, Yabukita is known for its distinctive taste profile, characterized by bold savory notes and delightful hints of steamed vegetables, further enhancing its appeal among tea enthusiasts.
